Bissau

The founders were brave as jaguars.

The capital of Guinea-Bissau is a sleepy city that sees more tourists from the UN and NGOs than from regular travellers. This is a shame, as Bissau has a lot to offer visitors. The city is located on the banks of the Geba River and is home to a large market where you can buy anything from fruit to guns. The city is also home to a few interesting historical sites, including the presidential palace, which is now a museum, and the Fortaleza de São José, a 17th century fort. There are also a few nice beaches located just outside of the city. Bissau is a great place to relax and take in the local culture.
