Essen is a city in western Germany, in the Ruhr area. It is the seventh-largest city in Germany with a population of 586,000 and the largest city in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area, which is Germany’s largest metropolitan area with a population of 11 million. Essen is an old city with a long history. The city was founded by the Celts in the late 4th century BC. The name of the city is derived from the German word Essen, which means “to eat”.
