Vung Tau is a seaside town in southern Vietnam that’s rapidly gaining a reputation as a beach paradise. Vung Tau is alright. Nothing exciting about the place, but it is nicely located at the ocean and there are some OK pubs and places to eat. If you stay long-term in Ho Chi Minh City it is a nice quick getaway for just the lower tempo and fresh ocean air when you need a breather. It takes about 90 minutes to get there. I went here 3-4 times when I lived in Ho Chi Minh City.

I did not like the beach much over there when visiting a few years ago, but I have heard that it is much nicer nowadays. My favorite thing to do in Vung Tau is to sit somewhere simple with an ocean view, preferably on the sidewalk and have a simple meal like grilled chicken with rice and a cold local beer.
