Island in 🇸🇪 Sweden.

Öland is a dreamy place, a windswept island off Sweden’s southeast coast that feels like a world away from the rest of the country. Famed for its beaches, Öland is a popular summer destination, but it’s just as lovely in the autumn, when the leaves turn golden and the air is crisp. The island is small enough to explore on foot or by bike, and there are plenty of charming villages and historic sites to discover, from the ruins of a 14th-century castle to the ancient stone circles that dot the landscape. Öland is also known for its food, especially its seafood, so make sure to try some of the local specialities, like smoked herring and lobster soup.

What people say

Öland is a great place to visit in the summer. The island's capital Borgholm is a cute village, but a quick stop is enough. I would recommend spending the majority of your time here to explore the island itself. The nature is subtle but somehow still dramatic. Large fields with a few lonely trees feel like something out of a movie, and the cliffs along the coastline are different from anywhere else in Sweden. There are many trails for hiking and biking, and on my next visit, I will be bringing my hiking boots. This time I had to settle for a gelato on a pebble beach. I can also really recommend the annual music festival called Borgholm Brinner. It is set in the ruins of an old fortress by the ocean, and it is a fairly small festival with only a few thousand people in the audience. It was founded by the Swedish metal heroes In Flames, and the focus is on excellent metal, punk, and rock.
