Arkhangelsk is a city in Russia, located on the banks of the Northern Dvina River. It is the administrative center of the Arkhangelsk Oblast and a major port on the White Sea. The city was founded in 1584 as part of the efforts by Ivan the Terrible to establish a Russian presence in the north.
