Târgoviște

Târgoviște is one of Romania’s most underrated destinations. The city is the birthplace of Vlad Țepeș, also known as Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. But there’s more to Târgoviște than its dark past. The city centre is centred around a lively square, surrounded by a mix of old and new buildings. The architecture is a mix of Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles, and the old town is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the impressive Palace of the Parliament, the largest building in Europe, or the nearby Râșnov Fortress. When you’ve had your fill of history, head to the city’s parks for a breath of fresh air, or to one of the many restaurants and bars for a taste of traditional Romanian cuisine.
