The Netherlands’ oldest city, Nijmegen is a picturesque riverside town that’s seen its share of history. The Romans built a fort here in the first century AD, and the city has been fought over and occupied by a succession of armies ever since. Today, the city is a lively student town, home to Radboud University, and its well-preserved centre is a mix of traditional Dutch houses and trendy bars and restaurants. The river Waal flows through the city, and is a popular spot for a walk or a cycle, while the surrounding hills make for great hiking. Nijmegen is also a great base for exploring the rest of the Netherlands – it’s just an hour’s train ride from Amsterdam.
