Nicaragua is a country located in Central America. It is bordered by Honduras to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east, Costa Rica to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. The capital of Nicaragua is Managua.

Nicaragua gained independence from Spain in 1821, and it was a part of the short-lived Central American Federation until 1838. Nicaragua then became an independent republic. The United States occupied Nicaragua from 1912 to 1933. During this time, the United States built the Panama Canal, and Nicaragua became a major transit point for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
