Takayama is a well-preserved Edo Period town in the Japanese Alps, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan. The old town is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is famous for its traditional architecture, including its many well-preserved samurai houses. Takayama is also known for its sake, and there are several sake breweries in the town. The Takayama Festival, held in April and October, is one of the most famous festivals in Japan.
