Hiroshima is a city on the southern coast of Japan’s main island, Honshu. It’s best known as the target of the first atomic bomb, dropped by the United States on August 6, 1945, near the end of World War II. The bomb destroyed most of the city and killed about 140,000 people.
Today, Hiroshima is a lively city and an important industrial center. It’s also a popular tourist destination, with attractions including the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, which commemorate the bombing and its victims.
