Perched atop a cliff overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Como, the medieval village of Varenna is a fairy-tale destination in Italy’s Lombardy region. The village is a labyrinth of narrow streets and ancient buildings, many of which date back to the 12th century. A number of churches and chapels are scattered throughout the village, as well as a few intriguing museums, including the Villa Monastero, which houses a collection of religious art. From Varenna, it’s easy to explore the rest of Lake Como, from the lakeside towns of Bellagio and Menaggio to the ski resorts of nearby Valtellina. Varenna is also a great spot to relax and take in the stunning views, either in one of the charming cafes and restaurants or by strolling along the lakeshore.
