Esztergom is Hungary’s spiritual capital, home to the impressive Basilica of Esztergom, the largest church in Hungary. The imposing neo-gothic structure, which took almost a century to build, dominates the cityscape and is visible from almost anywhere. The basilica is a popular pilgrimage site, due to the relics of St. Stephen, Hungary’s first king, which are housed inside. The rest of the city is packed with Baroque and Renaissance architecture, as well as a smattering of Art Nouveau, making Esztergom a fascinating place to wander around. There are also some excellent restaurants and wine bars, making it the perfect place to spend a few days.
