If ancient ruins are your thing, then Pula is the place for you. This coastal town in Croatia is home to some of the oldest Roman ruins in Europe, including a well-preserved amphitheatre that hosts an annual summer opera festival. But Pula is more than just an archaeological curiosity – it’s also a lively town with a beautiful setting. The narrow streets of the old town are lined with Venetian-style palaces, while the seafront is home to a string of lively cafes and restaurants. There’s also a good choice of beaches, from secluded coves to wide expanses of sand. And if you want to explore the rest of Croatia, Pula is a great base, with regular buses to Zagreb and other destinations.
