Cambridge is an ancient city steeped in history and learning. The University of Cambridge, founded in 1209, is one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, and the buildings and gardens of the campus are a major tourist attraction. The city centre is dominated by the imposing Gothic spire of King’s College Chapel, and other historic buildings include the 16th-century Bridge of Sighs and the 18th-century Fitzwilliam Museum. There are plenty of green spaces, too, including the Midsummer Common and the Backs, a riverside park that’s a popular spot for picnics and walks. In the evening, the narrow streets of the city centre come alive with students and locals out for a drink or a bite to eat.
