Bradford is a city in West Yorkshire, England, with a population of 528,000. It lies north of Leeds, and is the largest settlement in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Bradford rose to prominence during the 19th century as a mill town; wool was its main industry. The city was granted city status in 1897.
Today, Bradford is a cultural, artistic and commercial centre, and is home to the National Media Museum, Theatre Royal and Alhambra Theatre. The city's architecture is varied, and includes examples of Tudor, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, as well as more recent developments such as the City Park and the Lister Park. The city is home to two universities, the University of Bradford and Bradford College.
