Oviedo is a city in the north of Spain, in the autonomous community of Asturias. It is the capital of the province of Asturias and of the autonomous community. With a population of 215,000 in the city proper and a metropolitan population of 683,000, it is the second largest city in Asturias.
The city is located in the central area of the Asturian mountains, on the banks of the river Narcea. Oviedo is also the starting point of the Spanish Way, a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
The city of Oviedo was founded by the Roman general Flavius Julius Agricola in the year 73 AD, as the result of a campaign against the Astures. The city was originally called "Granada de Asturias", but was later renamed "Oviedo" after the Roman god of war, Mars.
