Gelnhausen is a small town in the German state of Hesse, located in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis. It is best known as the birthplace of Philipp Lahm, captain of the German national football team that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The town has a population of just over 26,000 and is located about 50 km east of Frankfurt am Main. The town's most famous landmark is the Gelnhausen town hall, a late Gothic building dating from the 15th century. The town's other sights include the old town hall, the parish church of St. Kilian, the castle ruins of Gleiberg and the ruins of the Heiligenberg monastery. Gelnhausen is a convenient base for exploring the surrounding countryside, which is home to the Spessart and Vogelsberg mountains. The town is also well connected to the wider region by rail and road, with Frankfurt International Airport just 50 km away.
