Porto Velho is the capital of the Brazilian state of Rondônia, on the banks of the Madeira River. It's a modern city, founded in the early 20th century, that's slowly being taken over by the jungle. The Madeira is the main transportation artery of the Amazon region, and Porto Velho is its most important port. It's also the starting point for a number of jungle expeditions.
