Palmas is the capital of the Brazilian state of Tocantins. It is a planned city, founded in 1989, and is also the youngest state capital in Brazil. Palmas is located in the middle of the Brazilian cerrado, on the Tocantins River. The city's population is about 270,000, making it the second most populous city in the state.
