Maceió is a Brazilian city located in the northeastern state of Alagoas. It is the capital of the state and the most populous city in the region, with a population of 1,031,095 in 2016. The city was founded on June 6, 1599, by the Portuguese. Maceió is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and is located on the banks of the Rio São Francisco, the longest river in the Northeast.
