Brasília is a planned city, inaugurated in 1960 as the new capital of Brazil, designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer. It is a city of monumental buildings, of wide avenues and spacious plazas, set in the middle of a tropical rainforest. The city centre is an open space surrounded by high-rise government buildings, while the residential areas are a mix of modern high-rise apartments and traditional Brazilian houses. There is a lively nightlife, with plenty of bars and restaurants, and a good selection of museums and cultural centres. Brasília is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors, with plenty of parks and gardens and a good range of sports facilities.
