La Paz

The Bolivian capital of La Paz is a city of contrasts. At an altitude of over 3,600 metres, it's one of the highest capital cities in the world, and the thin air takes some getting used to. The city sprawls out at the base of the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, and the streets are a chaotic mix of colonial architecture and modern high-rise buildings. The city's rich history is on display in the buildings and churches around the main square, while the markets are a great place to see traditional Bolivian handicrafts. La Paz is also a great place to sample some of the country's culinary specialities, such as the hearty meat stews called 'pique a lo macho' and the tasty corn-based drink, chicha.
