Linz

Artsy Austrians by the Danube.

Linz is an underrated city on the banks of the Danube in Upper Austria. It’s the third largest city in the country and the capital of the province, but it doesn’t quite have the same draw as Salzburg or Vienna. That’s not to say it’s not worth a visit – on the contrary, Linz is a charming city with a lot to offer. The main square, Hauptplatz, is a beautiful example of baroque architecture, and the surrounding streets are lined with imposing churches and other historical buildings. There’s also a lively arts and nightlife scene, and the city is home to the prestigious Donaufest music festival. If you’re looking for a more off-the-beaten-path destination in Austria, Linz is a great choice.
